Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu and the dermatologists behind Doctorly , Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield reviewed some of Japan's most popular/viral sunscreens, highlighting which formulas truly stand out and which ones don't quite live up to the hype.
If you're wondering which Japanese sunscreens deserve a spot in your routine, here's what both dermatologist reviews revealed.
How we decided
Biore UV Aqua Rich is arguably Japan's most iconic sunscreen. Dr. Jenny Liu calls it one of the best introductions to Japanese sunscreens thanks to its SPF 50+ protection, water resistance, lightweight watery texture, and nearly invisible finish. She also highlights its hydrating ingredients, including hyaluronic acid and royal jelly, along with Biore's Micro Defense Technology that helps distribute UV filters evenly across the skin.

Anessa is one of Japan's best-selling sunscreen brands, and Dr. Jenny Liu recommends it for outdoor activities thanks to its high UV protection and water-resistant formula. She particularly likes the gel version for dry skin because it provides a dewy finish without feeling greasy, while recommending the milk version for oilier skin due to its more matte finish. The formulas also include hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and green tea extract.
Doctorly meanwhile had a more mixed opinion. While they liked its lightweight feel and lack of white cast, they found the texture unusual, somewhere between creamy and gritty. Although it became more matte throughout the day, they ultimately preferred other Japanese sunscreens they tested.
One of Doctorly's biggest surprises was the Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick. They praised its invisible finish, easy application, and water resistance, making it especially useful for reapplying sunscreen while traveling or spending time outdoors. Because it glides directly onto the skin, it eliminates the need to touch your face with your hands, a major convenience when you're on the go. Among all the products they reviewed, this became one of their clear favorites.
Although less viral internationally, Dr. Jenny Liu recommends this Nivea sunscreen as an excellent everyday option. Its fragrance-free formula makes it suitable for sensitive skin, while its lightweight gel texture works well on both the face and body. She also appreciates its large pump bottle, which makes generous sunscreen application much easier than typical small tubes. The only drawback is that it isn't water-resistant, making it better suited for daily wear rather than swimming or intense exercise.
For those who love hydrating gel sunscreens, Dr. Jenny Liu recommends Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel. It features a lightweight, non-sticky texture with no white cast while providing broad-spectrum protection and water resistance. Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and arginine help keep skin comfortable throughout the day, making it ideal for hot, humid weather.
Dr. Jenny Liu also highlights the Isehan Sunkiller Perfect Water Essence as an excellent everyday sunscreen, particularly for people sensitive to alcohol-based formulas. Despite being alcohol-free, it still delivers a lightweight, elegant finish with no white cast and contains multiple forms of hyaluronic acid along with antioxidant-rich botanical extracts for extra hydration. While it isn't water-resistant, she considers it an excellent daily sunscreen under makeup.
Which Japanese Sunscreen Should You Choose?
If you're looking for a lightweight everyday sunscreen, Dr. Jenny Liu recommends options like Biore UV Aqua Rich, Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel, and Isehan Sunkiller Perfect Water Essence. For outdoor adventures or long days in the sun, Anessa Perfect UV and the Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick offer better durability and easier reapplication.
